Training in Hot Stone Massage

At Frangipani House we offer training from one hour up to one week. In one hour we help other therapists learn various techniques and we also supervise and mentor therapists who are just starting out. New therapists have found that it is really reassuring to have an experienced practitioner there to give advice and help add to their massage skills if it is needed. Mostly though we find that therapist come along wanting to learn Hot Stone Massage, or some Kahuna Massage Techniques.

Based in Port Macquarie, many of our students have found that they have a lovely weekend away while also learning new skills.

If you are new to hot stone massage, it is recommended that you use a towel between the client and the stones, as they can burn the client if they are too hot.

It's quite wonderfull to harvest stones for massage, there are some amazing places we have found stones, and it seems as though we are guided to them.

First we meditate to find out where we should go, then we follow our intuition.

Somedays we find large stones, and other days we find accupressure stones. Yet other days, all we do is enjoy nature. Then we come home warm the stones up and enjoy their warmth. Simply holding the warm stone in the palm of your hand is soothing.

If you haven't tried stone massage here's a quick way to see if you'd like it... simply warm up a smooth stone in warm water, just like you'd have a bath in, then roll the stone in a little oil, then sit there, and hold the stone in your hand for a moment or so, now slide the stone up your forearm... mmmmmm.... lovely

How To Heat Stones For Massage

Heating stones for massage is very easy. All you need is an electric frypan with enough water to cover the stones. The temperature of the water should be like that of a lovely warm bath. If you can place your hands into the water then the water temperature is suitable. The stones should be warm to hold, but not hot enough to burn the skin... if the stone is too hot to hold it is too hot to massage with. Just as you would adjust the temperature in a bath in order to enter the water, so too you want to adjust the water temperature that the stones are bathing in.

NEVER EVER heat your stones in a microwave or in a dry oven. The stone may have an air bubble deep within the stone that you cannot see. This air bubble can expand with heating and the stone could shatter.

After practising Hot Stone Massage for many years, I learned to appreciate, seemingly ordinary stones, and now stones have never seemed the same. Stones now fascinate me. Stones I wouldn't have given a second glance, now stop me in my tracks. Now I take time to look and may be take a picture, and stand and wonder at them.

I saw the stone in the picture above on the beach at Byron Bay and took this picture. Now that I know how long it takes stones to form, I am amazed to think that just at this point in time it and I are in the same place. You may know how long stones take to form, if not I can tell you that they have been around for a very very long time. Traditions of the Hawaiians and the American Indians say that the stones may be our ancestors. They say that our bodies turn back to the earth once we have passed on and that the dust from the ancestors mix with the earth and become parts of stones like this one.

Does that make you think differently about stones? It made me think differently. As I look at stones now, I think of stories such as this...

How did the quartz get into the place it is right now in the stone?
Do you ever stop and wonder at the things in nature that may seem ordinary?

Feel the Peace of Nature

This stone picture was taken on a beach one morning. Someone had stacked the stones one on top of one another and the colours caught my eye. Often I notice stones that have been stacked on headlands or beaches... but don't always have my camera.
